One of the major roles of law enforcement relates to roads and highways. "Protecting the public" provides opportunities to enforce any other "victim-less" crimes suspected. Already they are manufacturing automobiles that are sensitive to potential accidents and are capable of preventing them. What if you could set your car for speed and destination and it takes you where you want to go without the threat of causing harm to yourself or anyone else. That seems foreseeable. Cruise control has been around forever. GPS, satellites routing your course, and cars that are able to avoid collisions... What reason would there be to have police monitoring personal travel if there is no threat to safety? I wonder though how much we would miss being in control, and being responsible for our own and others' safety...not to mention the "fun" of driving! In my own neighborhood, I've seen "drug busts" a couple of times. It was dubious as to whether the people involved had ANY drugs, let alone the amounts they were supposedly dealing out of their homes. I hate to sound like a fear-monger, but how can we call ourselves a free country when this kind of thing happens so often? By the way, what ended up happening after you wrote this piece? Any more news? Your’e right about people being conditioned to accept this kind of corrupt authority. In my own neighborhood, I’ve seen “drug busts” a couple of times. Of course he was responsible for his actions and there are certainly other ways he could have gone about protecting himself. I wasn't saying he was not responsible for shooting those officers - but I was saying that he was not morally wrong in doing so. Shaunna,

All you have to do is look back to Alcohol Prohibition in the 1920s to see that criminalization is a flawed policy. It makes addicts into criminals, and it CREATES the problem of drug crime. If using and selling drugs wasn't so severely punishable, there wouldn't need to be violent gangs to sell them!
