“The most beautiful makeup of a woman is passion. But cosmetics are easier to buy.”
― Yves Saint-Laurent
Liberty heroines: They’re sexy. They’re fierce. They study economics. AND they have their own Youtube Channels. Meet Amanda BillyRock and Dorian Electra.
She explains in one of her videos that after hearing all the world’s problems being blamed on the bad economy, she realized that she was unsure what an “economy” even was, nonetheless what was so bad about this one. She discovered the message of free market economics by reading from two opposing views on the matter. One book, which she described as incredibly boring, was about the failure of America’s “capitalist” system. The other book explained issues with government controls on an economy and how this leads to a system of corruption. She described the read as not only fascinating but that it also made her feel good. From there, she researched the word libertarian, which had been tossed around in the pro-market book, and found Ron Paul. Ron Paul, as many of you may know, has spent decades prosthelytizing the importance of unrestricted trade, peace, and the Austrian School of economics to millions around the world.
Making youtube videos is one easy way women in this movement can inspire literally thousands of people to the message. Take Amanda’s most popular video for example: Three months ago she made a video called, “Will Ron Paul-ers Vote For Romney?” in which she simply shared a facebook comment from a friend’s post. It’s had almost 40K views. It is probably safe to say that the liberty movement is a mostly male-dominated one, giving women an incredible edge on reaching others.
Time for a good ol’ fishing analogy: A purty face is the bait, and passion is what reels those viewers in. And don’t give me the, “But I’m not pretty” excuse. Pretty is subjective, meaning that different fish are attracted to (or moved to action by) by different types of bait. Not to mention that confidence goes a long way in making yourself attractive to others. Take this cyber ball and run with it if you want to share what you have to say with the internet world.
Music can change the world. And it does. How often does some song lyric get stuck in your head? That’s why advertisers like jingles. Our little monkey-brains can’t help but spread that jingle around with us wherever we go, no matter how much we actually dislike the tune or what it stands for. Face it, when it comes to catchy melodies, we humans are totally helpless. If this element of the human brain were to go unexploited, it would be a huge waste to any cause.
Not all of us qualify as artists, and even fewer of us can carry a tune. That shouldn’t keep the tone-deaf from making Youtube videos, but I speculate that the use of music helps spread the message farther and wider than without.
Take Dorian Electra. She, with a little help from her friends, has created multiple music videos that have taken the “dissmal” science of economics and made it song-worthy. She’s quirky, she’s talented, she’s cute, but before you mainstream econ dudes get too excited, you should know: Friedrich Hayek is her guy. Although I think she may have a thing “on the side” with Frederick Bastiat; it’s complicated. You probably shouldn’t get involved.
A word of warning about becoming a youtube sensation: there will be backlash.
The website, Gawker, wrote a nasty article about Dorian Electra. This is actually a huge blessing for any youtube star, beause it means someone out there feels disturbed that their belief system is at odds with what logic you’re “throwing down”. It also generates more views for your videos. Haterz gonna hate, but lovers are the ones who generally win on the battlefield of ideas. Something to keep in mind.
So put your sexy self out there, make a splash, and don’t apologize for having a vagina AND an opinion. We all have something to say. Even if some views you have are misguided, based on bad information, or in some way ignorant of reality, you will be corrected and made better by the experience. Risk is part of the essence of life, so stop making excuses and just do it. (Said I, to myself =p)
Keep it classy, as always, Ladies.
